Job Summary:

The Marist College Campus Dietician provides medical nutrition therapy, nutrition counseling, and nutritional education and programming to promote wellness and enhance student success to the Marist student community. This position is shared between Health Services, Counseling Services and Athletics, and so requires expertise in working with students with acute and chronic health conditions, mental health conditions and eating disorders, as well as understanding and supporting the unique nutritional needs of the Division 1 college athlete. The Campus Dietician works collaboratively across the Divisions of Student Affairs and Athletics, reporting to both Director of Health Services and Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine, as well as other key College areas to achieve the College’s wellness and student centrality objectives as per the Marist 100 Strategic Plan.


This 12-month position involves provision of a range of nutritional services to a diverse student population, including intake and assessment, individual nutrition therapy, group meal planning and education, coaching individual athletes and teams, consulting and policy development. Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of relevant experience
  • Clinical treatment of eating disorders and REDS; exercise and performance nutrition and clinical sports nutrition; as well as experience working with diverse populations.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field

Essential Functions:

  • Clinical Responsibilities – Health/Wellness
a. Provides individual nutrition assessments, develops treatment plans, and provides individual nutrition consultations for Marist College students eligible for services through Marist Health Services
b. Utilizes standardized medical nutrition therapy protocols and monitors effectiveness
c. Considers the student's medical needs and dietary data for case plan development
d. Tailors education strategies and therapeutic goals to student’s cultural, socioeconomic, psychological, religious, and other personal needs
e. Schedules follow-up appointments and refers clients to on- and off-campus resources as needed
f. Documents thoroughly and accurately in the electronic medical record according to all Marist College and applicable regulatory agencies policies, regulations, and guidelines
g. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions and education through analyzing outcome measures, clinical indicators and patient satisfaction surveys
h. Communicates clearly, professionally, and promptly with students, MaristHealth Services (MHS) and Marist Counseling Services (MCS) providers, external referral sources, and other resources to which students are referred
i. Cooperates with all MHS and MCS staff and providers to facilitate optimal patient care
j. Participates in the multidisciplinary care of students with disordered eating concerns
i. Attend Eating Disorder Case Management meeting
ii. In conjunction with MHS and MCS clinicians and Sports Medicine trainer, develop multidisciplinary care plans for students
iii. Communicate with off-campus therapists, clinicians, dieticians, and family members as needed
 
  • Clinical Responsibilities – Athletics
a. Provides the above listed services and actions for Marist College Division 1 athletes, when referred by sports medicine staff, coaching staff, or self-referred.
b. Collaborates with Athletic Department staff in informing clinical care and implementing treatment plans, in addition to the other expected collaborative efforts listed above
c. Preserves privacy and confidentiality by following Marist College policies, and all other regulations governing the protection of personal health information, in communications with Athletic Department staff, families and other stakeholders
d. Develops and implements screening programs designed for early detection of and early intervention for nutrition and energy balance concerns in high risk athletes.
 
  • Nutrition Education and Wellness Support – Health/Wellness
a. Leads Marist College efforts in creating and incorporating nutritional education and programming to enhance the role of good nutrition and healthy eating in student success and wellness.
b. Collaborates actively with primary health and wellness partners in providing outreach events, presentations, and other support to student groups engaging in nutrition-related wellness activities
c. Coordinates with groups across campus and the Dining Services nutritionist to achieve consistency in nutritional health messaging across the wide variety of communication opportunities and platforms on campus
 
  • Nutrition Education and Wellness Support – Athletics
a. Provides nutrition education and coaching to all Division 1 athletic teams, grounded in evidence-based practices and targeted to the unique needs of each sport. Examples include designing training tables, fueling for practice vs competition, fueling for strength and conditioning training, recovery meals, etc.
b. Provides coaching to athletes, coaches and teams on individual and group behaviors to improve compliance with recommended nutritional plans in order o achieve optimal fueling for athletic performance for individual athletes and teams as a whole
c. Advises athletic staff how to implement, coach and support athletes to hit nutrition targets for practice, competition and travel
d. Provides education to athletic staff and athletes on nutritional disorders (such as eating disorder and Relative energy Deficiency in Sport), and teaches strategies for prevention, identification and the importance of early intervention
e. Emphasizes the importance of nutritional balance in the overall health and wellness of student athletes, coordinating with athletic staff to achieve consistency in communication and implementation of nutritional recommendations
 
  • Consultation – Health/Wellness and Athletics
a. Contributes to the development of policies and procedures within the Divisions of Health/Wellness and Athletics where appropriate
b. Informs stakeholders across campus to facilitate policies and procedures that support students in achieving nutritional wellness, including in academic areas
c. Provides consultation to Health/Wellness providers and Athletics to develop effective referral and data collection processes to create data-driven quality assurance and improvement processes
d. Contributes to development of policies and procedures to facilitate the multidisciplinary team management of students and student-athletes with disordered eating concerns by working with the leadership of Health Services, Counseling Services, and Sports Medicine
 
  • Professional Development
a. Participates in continuing education activities that enhance the delivery of medical nutrition therapy and nutritional education programming as necessary or requested by Health/Wellness and Athletics divisional leadership
b. Completes all trainings required by Marist College, and additional continuing education required to maintain essential certifications and licensure
c. Stays current with clinical nutrition and nutrition education literature and practice guidelines; proactively seeks out the latest information, and conducts literature searches as necessary
d. Routinely assesses knowledge, skills, and abilities for self-development and goal setting, and participates in the annual professional development cycle per Marist College guidelines
e. Conducts literature searches as necessary.
f. Attends Marist College staff development programs and organizational planning days.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education Health and Wellness and/or Athletics settings preferred.
  • Master's degree
